By Kaustubh on 5 October 2020

Apple Watch SE edition lacks always on display which is present in Apple 6 series watches.

Apple Watch SE is available only with aluminum case in silver grey and gold colors whereas Apple 6 series is obtained in aluminium, stainless steel and Titanium  Case with silver gray and gold colors.

The main difference in both of them is the availability of ECG and blood oxygen monitor.

ECG Feature in Apple Watch Series 6

ECG app in Apple watch series 6

ECG facility is available in the Apple watch series starting from series 4,5 and 6.

What is this ECG?

We all know ECG means ElectroCardiogram which shows the rhythmic beating of the heart. In general, the procedure is carried out with the help of electrodes which are placed around the area surrounding the chest. The electric pulses generated will give the rhythmic movements of the heart in the form of pulse waves.

Why is it so important?

Irregular beating of the heart is a major concern as it may lead to further complications. This condition is known as Afib(atrial fibrillation)

How is this feature implemented in the apple watch?

Apple Watch has built-in electrodes in the back of the watch. To know the ECG, one has to place his finger on the crown part for 30 seconds. Both the electrodes and the pulse readings from the crown part will generate the ECG. The readings are classified as

1.Sinus Rhythm where the beating of the heart is normal between 50and 100BPM.

2 A-fib Rhythm where the beating of the Heart is irregular between 50 and 120BPM.If your heartbeat readings come under this classification,

The results can be saved and reviewed under the concerned medical supervision.

3.Inconclusive Rhythm where the app fails to come under conclusion with readings showing the rate below 50BPM or above 120BPM.

How to use the ECG app

1.Install ECG app in Health app.

2.Set up the ECG app by following the steps seen on the screen.

3.Open ECG app

4.Place your arms on a table or in your lap.

5.Place your finger on the Digital Crown for 30seconds.

6.Once the reading is available you are prompted to enter further information regarding the classification.

7.Tap save and tap done.

The result can be obtained by

1.Open Health app

2.Tap heart and then ECG

3.Tap ECG chart

4.Tap Export a PDF for your doctor

5.Share or Print the PDF

My Opinion: If you have a medical history and need continuous heart rate monitoring, this feature is best recommended and Apple Watch Series 6 serves the purpose.

Blood Oxygen Meter Feature in Apple Watch Series 6

Blood Oxygen meter in Apple Watch Series 6

Blood in our body carries oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body. Hypoxemia is a condition where your body is not getting the levels of oxygen it needs. Hypoxemia can be observed by the change in color of skin to blue, shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, and sweating. If not handled properly this may lead to severe consequences.

What are the normal levels of oximeters?

In general, the readings range from 95 to 100 in a normal healthy human being. If the readings are below 90, it indicates that you are not having enough oxygen in the blood and there is a need to use an oxygen supplement.

How is Blood oxygen measured in Apple watch series 6?

There is a sensor in the Apple watch that helps in measuring the amount of oxygen present in your blood.

The sensor had Photodiodes and 4LED clusters on the back and while measuring green , red, and infrared LEDs shine on your wrist.

They pass through the blood vessels in your wrist and reflect. The color of the blood is the indicator of your blood oxygen level.

The blood oxygen app on your iPhone will show you the results.

This app is also not intended for users below 18years of age.

How to use the Blood Oxygen app?

1.Open Health app

2.Tap Respiratory and select Blood Oxygen

3.Set up Blood Oxygen by following the steps seen on the screen.

4.Open the Blood Oxygen app

5.Rest your arm on a flat surface and tap start.

6.After 15 seconds you will get the results.

7. Tap done.

What are the requirements for using the ECG app and the Blood Oxygen app in Apple watch series 6?

iPhone Os should be of the latest version. This app requires an iPhone 6s or later with IOS 14.

WatchOS should also be the latest.WatchOS7.is compatible with apple watch series 3 and later.

My Opinion: If you have a medical history related to respiratory problems and need to check your oxygen levels continuously Apple Watch Series 6 new feature serves your purpose.

Always-on Display

Apple Watch Series 6 comes with an Always-On Retina LTPO OLED display. This the best feature which is attracting everyone to opt for Series 6. you don’t have to click, rotate, or move your wrist to watch the time, series 6 always shows time even in the sleep mode.Apple Watch SE comes with Retina LTPO OLED display.1000 nits brightness.

What is this Always-On LTPO technology?

The technology which allows variable pixel refresher rates of the watch screen depending on the usage of the Watch. In general the pixel refresher rate when you are interacting with the watch is 60 Hz.

The Always-on feature is facilitated by the pixel refresher rate of 1Hz where the watch shows only time.

My Opinion: Always-on Display is the best-added advantage in Apple Watch Series 6. The display in SE is the same as that of series 6 with a stretched viewing area around the rounded corners with a display area more than 30 percent compared to series 3.Apple is saying that it’s Series 6 watch has this display which never sleeps, that is making it special in comparison with Apple watch SE

Apple Watch SE

S5 SiP with 64-bit dual-core processor

W3 wireless chip(Bluetooth 5.0.)

U1 chip(Ultrawide Band)

Users of the iPhone 11 must be familiar with this directional AirDrop feature facilitated by U1 chip.

This UltraWide Band radio frequency allows, Point and Share, sharing of high bandwidth data in short range.

This is an added integration in Apple Watch Series 6.

My Opinion: I didn’t find any difference in speed between the two watches in terms of performance, slightly one or two seconds delay in notifications in SE compared to Series 6 but that doesn’t come into count while using. So Performance wise both the processors are doing almost the same.

Wireless Networking Standard:802.11b/g/n

Frequency 2.4GHz

2.4GHz band provides long-range data transfers with slow data speed whereas the 5GHz band provides fast data transfer rates within a short-range.

My Opinion: Series 6 Provides fast data transfer rates with its fast WiFi frequency 5GHz, Apple Watch SE provides only 2.4GHz.

Both Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE provide you Emergency SOS. They can detect if you have a hard fall.

Final verdict:

If you are a new Apple Watch user and you need all the latest features provided by the latest Apple Watch Series 6 in an affordable budget you have to choose Apple Watch SE.
